Meet the Everyday Pen in Lunar Blue. Hybrid is the word: the ink flows like a fountain or rollerball pen, yet handling stays as easy as a ballpoint.

Japan, birthplace of the rollerball, is where it's made — by a factory with more than 70 years of pen-making behind it. We're in good hands.

Out of the needle-like 0.5mm tip comes an ultra fine writing line. First-time users tend to ooh and ah over a needle-point, and rightly so. It's a pipe shape rather than the conical tip on a typical rollerball, and the 3mm length keeps your line of sight clear while you write. Precise enough to follow a ruler, too. Add smooth ink and you have a match made in handwriting heaven.

Turns out the same factory are ink experts, with over one hundred years of ink-making under their belt. The soft ink is black, oil-based and low-viscosity, and its colour density is among the deepest on the market — great coverage, minimal reflection. Moving across the page it feels soft and flows freely, while giving you more control than a rollerball or fountain pen. Dark, precise, clear lines come naturally, which works beautifully for drawing and writing, and scans and copies well.

A natural cedar wood casing keeps the body as light as a pencil. One of six vibrant colours coats it, with subtle gold accents on top. The push button at the end of a pen is known as a 'knock' or 'knock button' — ours is brass, with a matching brass taper, so the pen is retractable and ready to carry at the click of a button. Look closely and you'll find 'Papersmiths' foil stamped in gold.

How to refill your pen

It's easy! Twist the pointy, nib end of your pen — not the push button! It will loosen easily. Remove the spring and the existing refill. Slide your fresh refill in, removing the protective bobble on the tip. Slide the spring back in until you meet resistance. Place the pointy section back onto the end of the pen and screw until secure. Hey presto, you're ready to roll!
