This A5 notebook holds 236 ruled pages, and every sheet is numbered. Two contents pages up front let you jump straight to the section you need. As you flip through, the page numbers shift colour bit by bit, sliding through the spectrum as the book goes on.

The opening page is a printed bookplate. Write your name and a contact detail, and a lost notebook has a fair chance of finding its way home.

Paper is 100gsm, smooth, and friendly to fountain pens with little show through. Highlighters, rollerballs, markers, brush pens, ballpoints and ink pens all behave, and so do graphite and coloured pencils. We tested plenty of markers, including Tombow Dual Brush, Twin Tone and Fudenosuke, Faber-Castell Pitt, Pentel Sign and Brush Pens, 20+ black brush pens and assorted drawing pens, and could use both sides of every sheet. Tougher alcohol-based markers such as the Windsor and Newton Promarker will show through more easily.

Lay flat binding means the notebook opens without forcing the spine. The inner pages are backlined within the spine and left free to move, while the cover is bound on with front and rear hinges only. On the cover, a blind-embossed Papersmiths mark sits at the back and a thumb print sized monogram at the front.
